A squat rack holds the bar at the height you unrack it and catches it if the lift fails. Almost everything else in a home gym is optional; this usually is not.

Ours use height-adjustable J-hooks on solid steel uprights and handle squats, bench press, overhead press, and barbell lunges. Open on all sides, so they take less space than a full cage.
